An app for designing Finnish style lesson plans

LessonApp is an application that helps teachers plan versatile and high-quality lessons. LessonApp follows a Finnish lesson designing process, and it contains pedagogically smart lesson structure that the teachers can use to plan purposeful lessons. LessonApp offers short video resources to explain, what improves learning, and how to design a lesson. Guidelines for the planning and implementation of distance teaching are also presented in the application. LessonApp has over 150 different teaching methods to choose from, an opportunity to save one's own lesson plans, and a database to browse ready-to-teach lessons.

The pedagogical analysis covers how the product supports learning of the identified skills. The student’s role is assessed by four contrary pair parameters, which are selected to cover the most essential aspects on the use of the product.

New users or those exploring different ideas can craft a lesson using only the provided methods, or they can even adapt a lesson shared by another teacher. Experienced or ambitious users can write lessons from scratch, guided only by the building blocks. Users are given support and made to feel confident that they can emerge with a well-structured, high-quality lesson plan. Videos on pedagogy are purposeful and interesting.

The product provides a pathway for a teacher to develop their lesson planning and teaching methodology skills. The product provides tools that empower new users to get started, namely videos that highlight key principles of Finnish pedagogy, a structured lesson planning guide, detailed summaries of various teaching methods, and the ability to browse the complete lesson plans of other users. As the user progresses, he or she can set aside tools that are no longer needed.

The solution promotes free exploration of tools and/or content. Users are encouraged to incorporate the knowledge of others into their learning process and to share their own. Shared lesson plans can be used to draw ideas from, examined for usage in other contexts, or used for comparing one's own lessons with. This also generates an infinite, ever-updating pool of learning. By allowing sharing the lesson plans, the product provides guidance for constructive collaboration. and an open learning community to share information, thoughts, and experiences.
